Listed by Fender from 1963 as a replacement for Shell Pink, Candy Apple Red was originally a genuine custom finish, whether for cars or guitars, and not a ready-made industrial paint. Candy Apple Red (CAR) was alleged to be Leo's favorite custom color, and hence was a very popular Fender color.
